Information resources of the modern library as a tool providing dialogue between cultures: the case of Norwegian libraries
Abstract
The article examines the role of information resources of Norwegian libraries in the process of intercultural
dialogue in the context of globalization and the digital transformation of society. The definition of a library’s information
resource is presented on the basis of the international definition of the concept of a “library.” Existing studies on
intercultural dialogue, the role of libraries in communicative processes, and the use of library information resources in
cultural interaction are analyzed. Offline and online resources of Norwegian libraries are described and classified. The
19
study focuses on the National Library of Norway (based in Oslo and providing online services throughout the country)
and the Deichman Library (23 units in Oslo), which have the potential to reach the largest audience. A structural
descriptive method with elements of content analysis is applied to examine the information resources and their functional
influence on intercultural interaction. The resources are analyzed from the perspective of their direct or potential
contribution to intercultural dialogue in digital and physical environments, including both national and international
components. The study concludes that the information resources of Norwegian libraries create an inclusive space for
cultural interaction and play a key role in supporting cultural integration.
